Perennial & Grass Care

Perennials (including most grasses) are plants that don’t develop woody stems and can live for at least three years. This differentiates them from annuals (which can only live for one year, either because of their life cycle or because of the temperature they can survive) and from biennials (which complete their life cycle in 2 years and then die). This group of plants varies dramatically in size, shape, color, sun tolerance, and more, and their water needs can vary just as much. All perennials will need help with water when they’re newly planted, but their needs after they’re established can be very different from one to the next.

Watering Timeline

  • For the first 2-3 days that your perennial is in the ground, you'll want to water it daily for 1-3 minutes per plant. During very hot and dry spans, you may need to go back to watering your perennials daily even if they’ve been in the ground for weeks or months.

  • For the first several weeks that your perennial is in the ground, you'll want to water every 2-5 days (2-3 times per week) and water for 1-3 minutes per plant.

  • After the first month you can typically drop down to watering every 3-7 days (once or twice per week), still for 1-3 minutes per plant.

  • Late in the year and in the second year after planting, plan on watering roughly every 5-7 (about once per week) days.

  • It's important to keep this schedule up through the time your plant is getting established (typically 1 year for perennials and grasses).

  • Winter Watering - Perennials and grasses are typically better off without winter watering, but there may be exceptions for some perennials that can hold their foliage year-round like Lenten Rose, or if there is a particularly warm span and you notice new growth.

Additional Notes

Once established, there are many factors that can impact how often and how much to water, including plant species, temperature, amount of shade, humidity, wind, season of planting, soil type, slope, and more. That’s why for long-term care, the best approach is to simply keep an eye on your plants for signs of stress and check the soil periodically.

Some perennials are more “dramatic” when they need water than others, and you’ll likely get a sense quickly for which plants these are. If they wilt, it can often let you know that your garden needs more water than it’s getting. Even if other plants aren’t showing it as obviously, this is a good sign they need more water too.
